VARIETY inverts the classical narrative structure of cinema – the man looks and the woman is looked at – without revealing the object of female desire and thus putting it on show. Christine lives in New York and needs a job, finding one selling tickets at a porn cinema. She sits in the ticket booth between the entrance to the cinema and the street, meaning everyone going to see the films has to pass her. She gradually develops a fascination for the porn industry. When a cinemagoer invites her to a baseball game and abruptly leaves, she begins to follow him. Her obsession leads her through dark streets and fish markets and perhaps into the world of the mafia.
